Sweat Free Mattress Pads

Sweat-free mattress pads let you sleep in comfort throughout the night. Instead of waking up hot or cold and wet your mattress pad absorbs the sweat and wicks it away from your body. Choose from cotton, wool or sheepskin mattress pads to make your bed more comfortable.

Everyone perspires, it’s a normal and necessary body function. There are times when excessive sweat can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. It is generally a bad idea to sleep directly on a mattress which is why many people top off their mattresses with mattress pads. Choosing the wrong mattress pad can turn your nights into a tossing, sticky misery. Luckily there are a few guidelines for buying sweat free mattress pads.

Remember that sweat is good for you — when it evaporates. Sweat is a mixture of body water and waste products. Your skin transports these wastes to its surface where, ideally, the liquids evaporate and leave the body. The solids are taken care of by routine bathing. If you want sweat free mattress pads, then you want sweat to evaporate instead of soaking into the mattress pads. One thing you can do is avoid sleeping under too much covering. Let your skin breathe and sweat will evaporate, leaving you with sweat-free mattress pads.

But what’s important is not so much that the mattress pad be free of sweat, it’s important that you be free of sweat! You need a mattress pad that absorbs sweat and wicks it away from your skin. Hollow-fiber fabrics can do this; they include cotton and wool. Silk does not have wicking properties, being a solid fiber, as are synthetic fibers like nylon, rayon, and polyester. This is why many sweat-free mattress pads are made of 60 percent cotton and 40 percent synthetic fiber.

Organic cotton and wool are preferred because they have not been treated with chemicals that might plug up their hollow fibers. Wool is especially good for breathing even when wet or damp; and it’s naturally anti-microbial.

How the fiber is woven matters, too. Tightly woven cotton or wool does not wick away moisture as well as loosely woven cloth. Terry cloth makes an excellent sweat-free mattress pad; its many tiny tufts wick up moisture in a mattress pad just as they do in a towel or wash cloth. Flannel is another cloth that has a fuzzy surface and excellent wicking power. Many people swear that natural sheep wool makes the best sweat free mattress pads of all.

Sweat-free mattress pads come in all sizes and styles. You can find them in cushiony pillow tops with deep aprons that go all the way around the edges of the mattress, as well as in thin protective configurations that have straps at all four corners. Quilted cotton mattress pads are very popular. For the best all-round comfort, make sure that the mattress pad is filled with cotton or wool so sweat will be wicked up even more efficiently.

Sheepskin wool mattress pads are among the most effective and expensive sweat-free mattress pads. They are typically not made from real sheepskins, but consists of tufts of natural sheep wool sewn to a backing. Make sure it’s a cotton backing for the ultimate comfort and washability. A sheepskin wool mattress pad may cost a couple of hundred dollars, but those who try them generally swear that they’re the best.

Sweat-free mattress pads are every sleeper’s dream, and an easily attainable one.
